Celebrated Cape Breton Fiddler Andrea Beaton will conduct a fiddle workshop and perform a concert at Johnson String Instrument in Falmouth on Tuesday, May 13, 2008. Ms. Beaton is the youngest in a long line of Beaton family musicians and will be accompanied by her mother, Betty Beaton. Her grandfather, Donald Angus Beaton, was one of the strongest and most popular fiddlers of his generation and at the same time her grandmother was one of the best Cape Breton pianist of her time. Her father Kinnon and mother Betty continue in that fiddle/piano tradition as some of the top players on the island today. The family ties go on to include her uncle the revered Buddy MacMaster and world-renowned cousin Natalie MacMaster. Cape Breton fiddle playing is highly accented dance music, characterized by the driven bow. The tunes of other music origins (Irish, Canadian, French-Canadian, etc.) sound quite different when performed by Cape Breton players. The strong downbeat pulse is driven by the fiddler's heel into the floor. The pattern tends to be the heel on reels, heel-and-toe on strathspeys. Timing is a notable trait of Cape Breton music because good timing brings dancing alive. Ms. Beaton’s music is at once her own and deeply rooted in the tradition associated with the Mabou coalmines. In her playing you can hear the power associated with her grandfather and the timing of her parents. She has released three solo CDs and played on countless others. Ms. Beaton will conduct a fiddle workshop open to all levels at 5:00 p.m. and perform with Mrs Beaton at 7:30. Concert tickets are $15 and workshop registration is $20. Both will be held at Johnson String Instrument in the Queens Buyway at 49 North Main Street in Falmouth. Call 508/495-5551 for more information. The workshop is at 5 p.m. with a registration fee of $20 while the concert is at 7:30 pm and tickets are $15. For more information call us at 508-495-5551. |
